It was a packed room for our February 2019 Government
Affairs Forum with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, his first Greater
Boston Chamber address since being reelected in November 2018. More than 700 –
one of our largest Government Affairs Forums of all time – packed the Westin
Copley Place to network and hear Governor Baker elaborate on his priorities,
and the work his administration already has planned to tackle them.
Governor Baker touched upon numerous issues that are aligned
with the Chamber’s own public policy priorities including climate readiness,
transportation, education, and housing. When it comes to housing, we were happy
to hear that Governor Baker remains committed to remedying the Commonwealth’s
housing shortage and reintroducing his Housing Choice bill. In his remarks
Governor Baker stated, “We are pushing people and families out of Massachusetts
if we don’t do our jobs and back into the business of housing production.”
The Boston business community couldn’t agree more – the
shortage of workforce housing is a critical competitiveness issue in our
efforts to attract and retain a talented workforce. Governor Baker’s bill would
take meaningful steps forward by increasing housing development and rewarding
that development with potential transportation investment opportunities. The
Chamber and our members are eager to see the Housing Choice bill advance.
