2008 Job Creation Policy Agenda

With the new legislative session underway, the Chamber has outlined a robust job creation policy agenda designed to drive job growth, boost economic competitiveness, and enhance the quality of life throughout Greater Boston.

The Chamber will work to advance our competitiveness through four key areas of focus:

REDUCING BUSINESS COSTS

  • Health Care – Moderating cost increases and expanding access as the health care reform bill is implemented

  • Corporate Taxation – Advocating corporate tax reform that promotes job growth and investment in the region.

  • Energy Reform – Easing existing burdens on regional consumer and provider markets by expanding energy alternatives.

  • Housing – Spurring workforce housing production by securing long-term funding and incentives.

IMPROVING WORKER SKILLS

  • Worker Retention & Skills Gap – Expanding the skilled worker pipeline via talent retention and training initiatives, including the Chamber’s Boston’s Future Leaders and Women’s Network programs.

  • Minority Professional Development – Expanding opportunities for minority-owned businesses in the region.

PROMOTING INNOVATION

  • Life Sciences – Furthering development of the critical life sciences cluster through permitting and regulatory improvements, as well as federal research funding.

  • Financial Services – Strengthening one of the region’s largest industries via legislative advocacy, regulatory reform, and skills training.

  • Federal Research Funding – Driving federal research funding growth with a national, Chamber-led coalition.

STRENGTHENING INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Transportation Finance – Prioritizing and promoting infrastructure improvements while advancing structural cost reforms.

  • Alternative Funding Options – Evaluating new revenue sources based on job creation impact.

Through enhanced collaboration with business groups, expanded legislative outreach, and a focus on job creation, the Chamber will continue to work to improve the economic future of all who live and work in the Greater Boston region.
