Event Description: Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray Commonwealth of Massachusetts Tim Murray was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts in 2006. A former three-term mayor of Worcester, Murray is the first mayor to be elected governor or lieutenant governor in more than 50 years – bringing to the corner office a unique commitment to helping cities and towns across the state improve the quality of life for their residents. A key advisor to Governor Patrick, he serves as the administration’s liaison to the legislature and the state’s 351 municipalities – particularly on issues such as the improvement and expansion of commuter rail services, improvement of maritime economies for coastal communities, and brownfields redevelopment. In addition to his role as chair of the Governor’s Council, Murray also has been entrusted with oversight of councils on domestic violence, substance abuse, homelessness, and veterans' affairs. As Mayor of Worcester, Murray helped transform the state’s second-largest city from an old-industry hub into a center of new growth and economic development. He worked to maximize job creation and business development, secured more than $1 billion in new development projects, and positioned Worcester to succeed in the state’s innovation economy. Having served as chairman of the Worcester School Committee, Murray also understands the challenges faced by urban education systems. Under his leadership, Worcester schools lowered drop-out rates, launched school-based health initiatives, and expanded after-school programs to support working families. Murray is a graduate of Fordham University and Western New England School of Law.
