Gary has 19 years of
experience in civil engineering, principally in
site design and permitting for commercial
developments and educational facilities. As
Civil Engineering Department Manager and
Principal at Nitsch Engineering, a Boston-based
firm with 70 employees, Gary is responsible for
overseeing a staff of over 25 civil/site
engineers and serves on the Nitsch Engineering
leadership team responsible for key operational
issues.
PG: What is the
coolest part of your job?
GP: I really like
interacting with people, so the coolest part of
my job is working with our amazing staff and
clients on some very exciting projects –
particularly our permitting work on some large
Boston projects and our sustainable work up and
down the east coast.
PG: If you were
recruiting someone to work for you, what would
be your number one selling point about the
company you work for?
GP: You will enjoy
your days because we have such great people.
PG: What is your
favorite thing about working in Boston?
GP: The local sports
teams are always in the hunt/winning, and I love
New England weather.
PG: Favorite place to
take a client for lunch?
GP: Brandy Pete's
PG: If you could have
any job in Boston, other than your own, what
would it be and why?
GP: I would love to
work on the development side of either the Red
Sox or Patriots organizations. They really have
everything figured out.
PG: Where do you see
yourself in 10 years?
GP: Still at Nitsch
Engineering, working in the
development/construction industry.
PG: Favorite place to
relax after a long day or week?
GP: At home or in
Vermont with my wife and kids.
PG: What’s the best
piece of career advice you have ever received?
GP: “Always keep an
eye on the big picture and don’t get caught up
on the little snags along the way.” AND “Remain
humble.”
PG: Best place for an
after work drink?
GP: The Fours on Canal
Street.
PG: Who do you admire
in the business world?
GP: The Kraft Family,
Larry Lucchino, and the "Life is Good" guys.
PG: How can young
professionals expand their networks and increase
their impact in Boston?
GP: Go to applicable
professional association events and meet new
people … become a member of a professional
association and join a committee/volunteer.
PG: What reading
material is on your nightstand?
GP: Latest Sports
Illustrated, and
Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and
War by Nathaniel Philbrick.
PG: Tell us something
we should know about you.
GP: I love coaching
youth soccer and basketball in Natick. Watching
the kids develop as athletes is fun, but I
especially love watching them develop as people.
